So there was no American cars on display.

Exactly.....when is America going to wake up??  We can't keep American auto factories (and all of the small trickle down companies that contribute to the manufacturing of a vehicle) open if we continue to buy foreign cars.  It's really rather insulting to look around and see virtually 80% of what's on the road being imports from one country or another.  Where do the people who buy these things think their money is going??  To a laid off Ford worker?   And the foreigners just sit back and laugh at how gullible we are, as they take their money to the bank!   Wake up America......and start buying American.

Your opinion isn't supported by the facts Chinchin. I don't expect to change your mind but an honest appraisal of the American vehicles would show that they're nothing like the vehicles of 40 years ago. It's hard not to deal in stereotypes. Stereotypes make everything easy but not anything like the reality on the ground. All I'm asking is that you acknowledge the fact that American vehicles are on an equal level as the imports, assess the business angle of a buying purchase, and then think long term as in your children's children. If you did that, I think you would have a different viewpoint.

I agree on the American cars.  I've purchased all Ford's for the past few years and find there quality is really THERE!  2003 Escape, 2007 MKZ Lincoln and a 2009 Fusion.  What a difference they are from the older years!!!  I believe American car makers, especially Ford have finally woken alright, however a little late in the game.  They gave away the market by not listening to the consumer and more to the unions dictates in my opinion.  Too bad, but they ARE COMING BACK.  Give Ford a try!!

American cars rarely last beyond 100,000 miles without needing major repairs such as a new engine or transmision on America's mostly good roads. On hilly, pothole ridden Jamaican roads in the tropical heat, American cars don't have a snowball's chance in hell. Their front ends (lower steering compoents, ball joints etc.) are not very robust, their transmissions die very quickly with the frequently changing gradients and the engines, while somewhat variable in terms of reliaility are mostly crap. Add to that their incredibly poor resale value and high costs of repair and maintainance and you have the formula for a loosing bet. The Japanese and European alternatives offer much better quality and gas mileage, that explains US automakers' poor sales outside the US.  Why would i give up my 28mpg 98' Toyota Townace van for similar Chevy Astro with only 20mpg and maintenance costs through the roof, only to get half as much for it as i would get with the Toyota afterthe same amount of time?

Hey chinchin and omar, If what your saying is true, why is Buick rated THE most reliable brand in the whole world by J.D Power and Associates? Look it up. We got our Ford Taurus new in 1999, put 215,000 miles on it, and still have not needed ANY repairs, other than regular maintanance and a taillight from a parking lot mishap. No little toyota can do that! That car is not just an exception either, our Mercury Sable and Mustang are approaching 200,000 and are still driving great. You can't beat their quality of construction.

American cars are better then people think. You see more older American cars on the road, and they certainly dont die after 3 years. Imports require parts shipped over from where ever they came from(EXPENSIVE) and I have owned 3 vehicles, a 2000 Honda Prelude, a 2003 Ford F-150, and a Mazda 3. The Honda Prelude started breaking down after 100k miles *Cough* Honda reliability, the Mazda has 80,000 miles and its falling apart inside and out, but the F-150 with 70,000 miles runs like the day I got it. It has never had ANY problems and I mean ANY. America will surpass the imports in the years to come...Either that or we go to war with Japan and bomb all their factories again and totally obliterate their economy.
