Audi has a solid reputation for creating sporty open-top cars such as the TT and A4. Combine that heritage with some SUV personality and you get the world debut of the Cross Cabriolet quattro. Referred to as an experience, this concept is a successful blend between SUV and cabriolet.

The two-door four-seater takes the basic chassis and drivetrain architectures from the current A4 and A5 model line while chopping the roof off for open-air driving.  Painted in “Copper Sunset” and wearing chrome wheels with off-road tires, the Cross Cabriolet quattro has a muscular look complemented by a trademark Audi large front grille and dual exhaust outlets on each side.

Audi’s goal for this car is to give “the driver the best of both worldsthe freedom and elegance of a convertible blended with the spaciousness and versatility of an SUV.” To do that, the suspension has been tuned for sporty handling and the ride height can be adjusted with a touch of a button.

The interior has smooth, soft surfaces and a long list of convenience features, including an available 3-D interactive atlas can provide more in-depth views for the navigation system, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system derived from the A8. While the 505-watt amplifier processes the signals digitally for high quality, the sound system really comes into play with an Internet radio system that provides access to radio stations from all over the Web.

Under the hood sits a 236-horsepower 3.0-liter TDI engine with ultra-low emission technology that produces 368 lb-ft of torque. That kind of takeoff power can propel the Cross Cabriolet quattro from 0 to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds, with a top speed of 149 mph. Despite having so much power and permanent four-wheel drive, it averages about 32 mpg with its eight-speed automatic transmission.

Audi has no plans to create a production version of the Cross Cabriolet quattro, but it does provide a first glimpse of the upcoming Q5.
