Korean automaker Hyundai seems to have big news at just about every auto show lately. After debuting the all-new Genesis in Detroit last month, Hyundai took the wraps off a fresh, new Sonata here in Chicago.

On sale later this month (February), the 2009 Sonata sports new headlights, taillights, bumper fascias, body-side moldings and new alloy wheels. Inside, drivers will find an updated center console, a new instrument panel, and an upgraded audio system with USB auxiliary inputs. Sonata will also now be available with GPS navigations system that features a high-resolution display with touch-screen interface.

But the updates for the 2009 model year are more than just the visible changes. Two new engines are available: the new Theta II 2.4-liter 4-cylinder and an updated version of the Lambda 3.3-liter V6. Both engines provide more power and torque than the previous version while achieving better fuel economy as well as lower emissions. In fact, the Theta II engine is rated as a PZEV (Partial Zero Emission Vehicle), which is as good as many hybrids.

Suspension has been updated for the GLS and Limited versions, designed to provide sharper handling and better steering response. The Sonata SE gets a sport-tuned suspension that features 15 percent stiffer front spring rate, 10 percent stiffer rear spring rate, unique strut valving at all four corners, larger stabilizer bars and unique 17-inch alloy wheels and tires.

The Sonata remains an excellent value with a starting price of $18,795.

Elantra Touring

Hyundai also introduced the all-new Elantra Touring. The sporty 5-door is based on the i30 CW that is sold throughout Europe.

“The all-new Elantra Touring is a fun-to-drive, functional five-door,” said John Krafcik, vice president, product development and strategic planning, Hyundai Motor America. “Elantra Touring provides buyers a unique offering in the compact segment, raising the bar as Hyundai likes to do in value, safety and quality.”

While the Elantra Touring provides more utility than a standard sedan, it was designed as a driver’s car. Features such as the B&M Racing sport shifter, two-tone interior trim, sporty front seats and available 17-inch alloy wheels help the Elantra Touring meet this goal from a visual standpoint. In addition, the new model features MacPherson strut front suspension and multi-link rear suspension, ventilated front disc brakes, ABS, stability control and larger stabilizer bars than those found on the Elantra sedan.

In keeping with Hyundai's reputation for lots of standard equipment, the new Elantra Touring comes well equipped with air conditioning, power windows, heated mirrors, remote keyless entry with alarm, an eight-way adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, and an integrated 172-watt AM/FM/XM Satellite Radio/CD/MP3 audio system with six speakers, USB input and auxiliary input jack.

The Elantra Touring is scheduled to arrive in showrooms by the end of the year.
